According to Hindu tradition, it is believed that performing this ritual helps the soul attain peace, moving towards a positive afterlife.
During Pind Daan, a priest or a family member typically offers rice balls, water, sesame seeds, and other symbolic items in memory of the deceased. The ceremony is often conducted at sacred riverbanks, particularly in places like Gaya, Varanasi and Haridwar, where it is believed that performing the ritual near flowing water enhances its spiritual significance. Pind Daan is generally performed during specific times, such as the death anniversary of the departed soul or during special religious occasions.
