A day after the US warned of “potential risk of sanctions” after India inked a 10-year agreement for running the Chabahar Port in Iran, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasised that the project will benefit the entire region and people should not take a “narrow view” of it. He also pointed out that the US itself had appreciated the larger relevance of Chabahar in the past. The EAM was speaking at an interaction after the launch of the Bangla edition of his book ‘Why Bharat Matters’ in Kolkata. On being asked about the US’ remarks, Jaishankar said, “I did see some of the remarks which were made, but I think it’s a question of communicating, convincing and getting people to understand, that this is actually for everyone’s benefit. I don’t think people should take a narrow view of it.” “They (US) have not done so in the past. So, if you look at the US’ own attitude towards the port in Chabahar, the US has been appreciative of the fact that Chabahar has a larger relevance…we will work at it,” he added. Earlier on Tuesday, the United States warned that "anyone" considering business deals with Tehran needs to be aware of the "potential risk of sanctions." "I would just say...US sanctions on Iran remain in place and we will continue to enforce them,” the US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson, Vedant Patel said at the press briefing."

Slamming the Western media over the "negative" coverage of Indian elections, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the countries which "have to go to court for deciding election results" are giving "gyan" on conducting polls. Taking a swipe, he said the Western countries "feel" they have influenced the world for the last 200 years, so they are not able to give up their "old habits so easily." Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested three Indian nationals in connection with Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder. Soon after the arrest, diplomatic tensions intensified between India and Canada over Khalistani terrorist’s murder. Day after Indians were arrested, EAM Jaishankar talked tough over recent developments in Sikh separatist’s murder case. Turning the tables, EAM said that there’s nothing to fear as if something happened in Canada, it is for them to worry about. Attacking further, Jaishankar accused Canada of giving space to extremism, separatism in the name of “free speech”. EAM Jaishankar also slammed Ottawa for being silent on threats to Indian diplomats. Notably, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was a designated terrorist in India, was also a pro-Khalistan leader. Earlier, Canada accused India of alleged involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, the Canadian Police has not given any evidence of link to India’s involvement in the killing of Nijjar.

Slamming Pakistan over continuous cross-border terrorism, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on May 04 said that the neighbour will get an appropriate response adding that the Modi government will never make a compromise with the national security. Addressing an event in Bhubaneshwar, S Jaishankar said, “When it comes to national security, the Modi government will never make a compromise, it can be cross-border terrorism from Pakistan, it can be pressure on the border from China. While addressing the event, the External Affairs Minister categorically spoke about the India-China issues. He further hit out at India’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru-led government and alleged that they made policies that favoured China more than India itself.
