January 30 is nationally recognised as Martyrs' Day in India, to mark the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948 by Nathuram Godse- a Hindu nationalist.
Martyrs' Day, also known as Shaheed Diwas is celebrated in India by paying homage to the victims who fought for the freedom, glory, welfare and progress of India. Fifteen countries in the world including India, celebrate Martyrs' Day to give respect to their freedom fighters.

On Martyrs' Day the President, the Vice President, the Prime Minister, the Defence Minister, the Chief of Defence Staff and the three Service Chiefs gather at the samadhi at Raj Ghat memorial and lay wreaths decorated with multi-colour flowers. A two-minute silence in memory of Indian martyrs is observed throughout the country at 11 am. Participants hold all-religion prayers and sing tributes.

The contribution of Mahatma Gandhi towards the nation and its independence is known to all. He was not only a freedom fighter but taught the country importance of non-violence. After India got Independence in 1947, Mahatma Gandhi stayed away from politics and started working on the harmony, peace, and brotherhood among the people.
On January 30, 1948, Gandhiji, popularly known as the Father of the Nation’ was assassinated in the compound of Birla House- now known as Gandhi Smriti, during his evening prayers. Since then, the Government of India announced the day as Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs' Day.
Martyr's Day Significance
The history of Martyr's Day dates back to the year 1931 when the British Government hanged the three young freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev to death in Lahore jail. These freedom fighters were in their twenties when they sacrificed their lives for the country's freedom. The day is also remembered for other great freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
The Martyr's Day reminds us of the sacrifices made by the brave freedom fighters who gave up their life for India's freedom. This day helps us to honor the struggles and sacrifices made by the brave men and women of India to get independence from British rule. The day serves as an inspiration for the current generation.
