The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a yellow alert for Alappuzha district of Kerala for the day due to the likelihood of heatwave conditions, the PTI reported.

According to the PTI, the IMD said that maximum temperatures were likely to be around 38 degrees Celsius in Alappuzha, 39 degrees Celsius in Thrissur and Palakkad, 37 degrees Celsius in Kollam, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Kannur and 36 degrees Celsius in Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram and Kasaragod districts of the state till May 10.

These temperatures were three to five degrees Celsius more than what was normal for this time of the year, it said.

"Heat wave conditions are very likely to prevail at one or two places in Alappuzha district on May 9 (yellow warning)," it added.

The IMD also said that hot and humid weather was very likely over these districts except in the hilly areas during this period.

Rains in Nagpur; IMD predicts showers for next 3 days

Meanwhile, rains lashed Maharashtra's Nagpur district on Thursday morning and the downpour is likely to continue for the next three days in various districts of Vidarbha region in Maharashtra, the MeT officials said, reported the PTI.

According to the news agency, the showers led to a dip in mercury in different areas of Vidarbha where temperatures were hovering over 40 degrees Celsius.

An official from the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional office here said the region is witnessing rains due to wind discontinuity and upper air cyclonic circulation over central India, as per the PTI.

The IMD has forecast moderate rainfall in east Vidarbha and possibility of hailstorm and intense rainfall at isolated places in Nagpur.

The IMD said, Thunderstorm with lightning, gusty winds (with speed reaching 40-50 kmph) and light to moderate rainfall are very likely at isolated places in Akola, Buldhana, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Washim, and Yavatmal in the next three days.

There is also a possibility of hailstorm, thunderstorm and lightning with gusty winds in Amravati, Wardha and Nagpur districts of Vidarbha on Thursday, the IMD said, adding the thunderstorm and lightning will continue for the next three days.
