The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Sunday said that the northbound carriageway of the Mumbai Coastal Road will be inaugurated on June 10 by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The BMC said that Shinde, along with other dignitaries will be inspecting the second underground tunnel on Monday.
The BMC, which had undertaken the ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road project, said that 90 per cent of the work for the northbound carriageway has been completed and added that the route will be opened for traffic from the following. The civic body said that the northbound carriageway of Mumbai Coastal Road will be open for regular traffic from 7 am to 11 pm from Monday through Friday and that it shall remain closed for completion of the remaining work on Saturday-Sunday.

On June 10, 2024, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, Minister of State for Urban Development Deepak Kesarkar, Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburban District Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and other officials, will inspect the North Channel route.
"Around 90 per cent of the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road (South) Project is complete, and parts of the road are being opened in phases to reduce traffic congestion and improve travel for Mumbaikars. Previously, on March 11, 2024, the southern line from Worli to Marine Drive was opened," said BMC in their statement to the media.
"Now, a 6.25 km stretch from Marine Drive to Haji Ali is set to open, featuring interchanges at Amarsons Park and Haji Ali. These interchanges will facilitate traffic flow towards Worli, Bandra, Tardeo, Mahalaxmi, and Peddar Road," the civic body further stated.
Key features of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project
Mumbai Coastal Road's total length is 10.58 km, with 3.3 km of tunnels. The project also includes 2.19 km of bridges, a double tunnel of 2.07 km each, and a parking lot with a capacity of 1,856 vehicles. The total project area is 111 hectares, with 70 hectares of open/green space. The project cost is estimated at Rs 13,983 crore, with construction costs at Rs 8,429 crore. Work began on October 13, 2018, and is expected to be completed by October 2024.
The tunnels feature India’s largest diameter (12.19 m) constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM), with two lanes of traffic on each side. The Saccardo ventilation system, used for the first time in India, ensures proper ventilation within the tunnels, said BMC.
Monopile bridges are being constructed for the first time in India as part of this project, which includes roads, bridges, elevated roads, and green areas created through land reclamation, BMC further added.
