Rhythms of the Earth is expected to bring tribal contemporary music, in collaboration with Bengaluru-based folk fusion band Swarathma.
Samvaad, one of the largest tribal conclaves in India, makes its debut at Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (KGAF) this year. It is set to bring a vibrant tapestry of tribal art and culture to the 24th edition of the ongoing popular arts festival Mumbai -- from January 20 – 28.
This is the first expression of the Samvaad X Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, putting spotlight on Rhythms of the Earth, a tribal musical collective, along with several tribal artisans and artistes from different parts of India to showcase tribal artwork, handicraft and deliberating on ways to conserve, drawing inspiration from tribal wisdom. The participation of Samvaad in KGAF aims to establish a cross-pollination of ideas, fostering a deeper understanding of tribal art and culture.
Sharing his thoughts on the collaboration, Sourav Roy, chief executive officer, Tata Steel Foundation said, “Samvaad is manifesting collaborations with like-minded platforms, starting with the iconic Samvaad X Hornbill festival association signed during Samvaad 2022, and the esteemed Kala Ghoda Arts Festival in their 24th edition, happening in Mumbai. Integral elements of the Samvaad ecosystem will be on display at the week-long festival where Rhythms of the Earth, a cohort of tribal artistes, is bringing their debut performance and officially launching their album. This is a significant step in our efforts to promote tribal art and culture across urban marketplaces. We started with Johar Haat, a permanent marketplace in Jamshedpur and we expect to join forces with more like-minded platforms this year to create more opportunities. It is a noteworthy milestone for those who have walked with us through the journey of Samvaad and reposed their faith in us over the decade.”
Rhythms of the Earth, a remarkable ensemble of tribal artists, part of the Samvaad ecosystem, is expected to bring tribal contemporary music, in collaboration with Swarathma, a Bengaluru-based folk-fusion band. An art installation representing five tribal art forms, namely Sohrai, Paitkar, Gond, Saura and Oraon, has been unveiled for public display during the festival. Local artists from Mumbai are expected to join the exhibition to complete the installation, along with tribal artists, Dinabandhu Soren and Madhusudan Majhi, from Odisha. Lakhimoni Sardar, an emerging artist from the rural village of Potka, near Jamshedpur will also be conducting a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) workshop on January 28.

The festival will also host a panel discussion with tribal changemakers, moderated by Roy. It will aim to help understand conservation from the lens of tribal wisdom. The objective is to create an intellectual space for dialogue, focusing on the promotion of tribal artisans, their invaluable contributions, and the overall vision of TSF in championing sustainable practices and cultural preservation.
