Actor Emily Hampshire, best known for playing Stevie Budd on all six seasons of Emmy-winning comedy series 'Schitt's Creek', landed in trouble for her Halloween costume. The actress has now issued an apology for dressing up with a friend as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard for Halloween.

Hampshire posted and later deleted pictures of her dressed in the costume with her friend. The pictures led to massive social media outrage. She wore a brown suit that closely resembled to the one worn by Depp during his highly-publicised 2022 libel trial against Heard.

“I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done,” Hampshire wrote in an apology post. “For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe.”

“Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions. In the future I will do better. I’m so sorry," Hampshire added.

The Depp-Heard trial was centered around several allegations of abuse that took place during their relationship. Hampshire was criticsed for making fun of abuse. Meanwhile, some supported Hampshire saying people should take it as a joke.

Reacting to the apology, a user wrote, "I don’t think your intention was to make fun of domestic abuse…I think the intention was to make fun of the spectacle the trial became. I thought it was funny".

Another user wrote, "Nope. You're sorry due to the backlash. YOU posted it. YOU dressed up. YOU used props. YOU posed for multiple pictures. I cannot believe that you're now sorry for any other reason only people are upset with you. If no one reacted, you wouldn't think you did anything wrong."

Amber and Johnny had accused each other of domestic abuse during the defamation trial case. The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star had sued Heard for $50 million claiming she defamed him in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed about sexual violence. The 'Aquaman' actress lost the case and moved to Spain's capital city Madrid.

In a statement after the verdict, Depp said that Heard’s false claims had “a seismic impact on my life and my career. And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.” Depp added that he “overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and the colossal support and kindness from around the world,” and that the verdict left him “at peace.”
