Completely Indian again

The long weekend gave Akshay Kumar double the reasons to celebrate. First is the audiences’ response to his latest release, OMG 2. The actor-producer hosted a special dinner for the film’s team at his Juhu home. Co-actors Yami Gautam, Pankaj Tripathi and others joined in the revelry. The bigger cause for celebration was getting his Indian citizenship. Akki, who had been criticised for having a Canadian passport for the past many years, shared a glimpse of the official document on social media on the occasion of Independence Day. Some months ago, the actor had revealed that he had applied for Indian citizenship and he hoped that the paperwork would be processed in due time. Alongside a picture of the official government documents confirming his status, the actor wrote, “Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!”

Now that Gadar 2: The Katha Continues has become a blockbuster, Sunny Deol was asked about the sequels to his other films, Yamla Pagla Deewana and Apne. Conceding that the three films have their own space, the actor said, “Yamla Pagla Deewana had all of us together [papa Dharmendra and younger brother Bobby Deol]. We made the audience laugh a lot. Many people want us to do the film again, but for that, it’s important to first have a story.” Sharing that he has the story of Apne 2, which will see son Karan Deol join Bobby chacha, dada Dharam and him, Sunny added, “Let’s see when we begin. It’s a beautiful story of family values, an extension of what we have shown in Apne. Bas abhi mujhe lagta hai koi actresses thi jo role karne se dar rahi thi, shayad ab karegi.” Until then, Sunny has Baap with Mithun Chakraborty, Sanjay Dutt, and Jackie Shroff, being readied for release soon.

Prem and Suman from Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) are now batting for the filmmaker’s son Avnish’s directorial debut, Dono. The upcoming musical romance drama marks the screen debut of Sunny Deol’s son Rajveer, and Poonam Dhillon’s daughter Paloma. Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, who essayed the iconic characters in Sooraj’s maiden venture, will release the first song of Dono today. The Maine Pyar Kiya duo, who redefined love in the early 1990s, will also crown Rajveer and Paloma as the new Rajshri Productions’ reel jodi. While Bhagyashree took a break from movies some years after her big debut, Salman continues his association with the Barjatyas. The actor is slated to team up with Sooraj again for his next directorial venture.

Why say sorry?

During a promotional event for Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha in Hyderabad recently, Rana Daggubati shared an incident from the latter’s Hindi film with a Bollywood heroine. Without mentioning names, Rana recalled dropping in when the team was shooting near his home. While Dulquer was standing in a corner talking to a spot boy, his Bollywood heroine was “engrossed in a phone conversation about shopping in London with her husband. Her lack of focus affected the shots’ quality, frustrating those on set.” Netizens were quick to point out that the instance was about Sonam K Ahuja from the shoot of The Zoya Factor. Yesterday, Rana clarified that he was “genuinely troubled by the negativity that has been aimed at Sonam due to my comments.” He said, “As friends, we often exchange playful banter, and I deeply regret that my words have been misinterpreted.” However, social media users questioned Rana’s  diplomatic apology for stating the truth.

Elvish Yadav emerged victorious in Bigg Boss OTT 2, which is hosted by Salman Khan. Besides the coveted trophy, the YouTuber also takes home the prize money of R25 lakh. However, it looks like he got carried away with his win when he revealed that a JioCinema official told him that he got ‘280 million votes in 15 minutes’ that saw him win the reality show. Several netizens trolled Elvish, terming his revelations as “a big joke”.

Post haste?

Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 has made everyone sit up and take notice of the no-holds-barred massy entertainer. Varun Dhawan is no exception and he too shared a post. The Bawaal actor posted a picture of Paaji captioned, “Sunny Deol is letting Gadar 2 numbers do all the talking while he politely gets into the car today.” Alongside he wrote, “Power moves silently.” While Varun deleted the social media post, he uploaded another one instead. This time he shared a picture of himself posing with a standee of Sunny, wielding a hammer, with a water pump in front of him. Why Varun deleted his first post and uploaded another instead, well, your guess is as good as ours.

All praise for Junior’s next

A film has to be really special for an actor to see it twice in as many days. Guess, that’s what Ghoomer is for Amitabh Bachchan. Firstly, it is helmed by one of his favourite directors, R Balki, and secondly, it stars his son, Abhishek Bachchan. Late Monday night, the Indian cinema legend shared the experience on his blog. He wrote, “The verdict is beyond mention... simply incredible. Eyes have been in the aqua flow from the very first frame.. and when the progeny is involved, they flow copiously.” He also lauded “the deftness with which R Balki has knitted before us, in the simplest of manner, a most complex idea .. of losers and winners .. of what each one of us has been through.”
