Nag Ashwin’s dystopian sci-fi action film, Kalki 2898 AD, courted controversy soon after its trailer released on Monday. Days after watching the first glimpse of the film starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani, a concept illustrator and designer, who has worked with Marvel Studios, Disney, and Warner Bros, has taken to social media to call out the makers, Vyjayanthi Movies, for seemingly copying his artwork.

Sharing the frames from Kalki 2898 AD and his own artwork dating 10 years, Sung Choi criticised the unauthorised use of his creation. If his post is credible, Choi’s comparison inarguably appears to hold merit.

“Unauthorised use of artwork is a bad practice. This makes me question doing art in this lawless environment,” he shared on social media, tagging the film and the production house.

The illustration that Choi calls his own appears to be published on his website a decade ago.

Another concept illustrator, Oliver Beck, called out the makers for ‘stealing’ his artwork from the film, Star Trek: Prodigy (2021). He wrote, “Sad to see that some of the work I did for Star Trek: Prodigy got stolen by Vyjayanthi Movies in their trailer.” Beck also shared his creations to back his claims.

Netizens came out in support of the artistes and slammed the production house. “I hope you pursue legal action, if possible. This is awful,” wrote a user. Another wrote, “I don’t know how some of the concept designers who worked on the film can stay silent [after this criticism]?”
