Anish Saini, originally from Ambernath, Thane, Maharashtra, India, has made a significant mark in Hollywood as a gaffer. 1. What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
Since childhood, I have been fascinated by films, thanks to my dad, who introduced me to many amazing movies. Initially, I dreamt of becoming an actor, but as I learned more about filmmaking, I realized the magic behind the camera captivated me more. My undergraduate program in Mass Media at CHM College deepened my understanding of cinema. Moving to Los Angeles for my MFA at the New York Film Academy, I discovered my passion for lighting and decided to become a gaffer. The creative challenge of shaping scenes with light enthralled me, and my family's unwavering support was crucial in my journey.

2. Can you tell us about your educational background, career journey, and notable achievements?
After completing school, I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Media at CHM College, where I became intrigued by the filmmaking process. Moving to Los Angeles, I earned my MFA in Filmmaking at the New York Film Academy. During college, I worked on various student short films, music videos, and other projects, which helped me hone my skills. My notable works include "Rift | Duhi” (feature film), "Retrieval" (short film), “Voler - Love, Loss and Moving on” (short film) and "Carnotes" (short film), which have won awards and been selected for prestigious film festivals like the Golden State Film Festival, The British Short Film Awards, Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival, Tagore International Film Festival, and Cannes Short Film Festival, to list a few. Currently, I’m working at Dhar Mann Studios, creating impactful short films that address social issues.
3. What does a gaffer do, and how challenging is it to break into the industry?
A gaffer is responsible for lighting on a film set, creating the desired visual mood and atmosphere. Breaking into the industry can be challenging, but connecting with experienced professionals and gaining hands-on experience on set is invaluable. The internet and social media have also played a crucial role in providing learning resources and networking opportunities for new filmmakers. The key is to remain curious, ask questions, and continuously immerse oneself in the craft.
4. Can you share some of your experiences and insights from working in both Bollywood and Hollywood? Which industry do you find more favorable?
Both industries have their unique strengths. Hollywood has been incredibly welcoming and supportive, with a collaborative spirit that aims to push boundaries. In Bollywood, I've seen significant growth and a push towards innovative content. Indian cinema is evolving, aiming to break regional constraints and emerge as a unified entity. Each industry offers unique opportunities, and my preference depends on the specific goals and creative aspirations of each project.
5. Are you currently working on any projects that are about to be released?
Yes, I’m currently in the preparation phase for an exciting action-adventure project set to start in November. While I can't share specific details yet, I'm thrilled about this project and hope the audience will enjoy it once it's released.
6. Who has been a significant source of inspiration for you?
My parents have been my greatest inspiration. Coming from a middle-class family, the dream of making it in Hollywood seemed daunting. Their tireless support and sacrifices have allowed me to pursue my dreams. Their belief in me is the foundation of my success, and I owe everything to them.
7. How do you stay motivated, and does your family support your career?
Remembering my parents' struggles and sacrifices keeps me motivated. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in my journey. The love and encouragement I receive from them fuel my drive to excel and make them proud.
8. Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Reflecting on my journey, I see tremendous growth from an amateur filmmaker to a professional working on significant productions. I envision myself working on some of the biggest movies in the next five to six years, thanks to the continuous support and encouragement from Hollywood veterans. I strive for excellence and am confident that success is on the horizon.
