How to Get Your Ration Card: Eligibility, and Application

Ration Card

In India, a ration card is an essential document that entitles eligible individuals and families to subsidized food grains and other essential commodities through the Public Distribution System (PDS). The ration card serves as a proof of identity and address, and it plays a crucial role in ensuring food security for millions of low-income households across the country.

Ration Card Eligibility

Eligibility for a ration card varies slightly across states and territories. However, the general criteria are based on income levels and socioeconomic factors. To determine if you qualify for a ration card, you should contact your local Food and Supplies Department or visit their website for specific guidelines.

Common Eligibility Criteria:

Below Poverty Line (BPL): Individuals and families falling below the officially defined poverty line are typically eligible for BPL ration cards, which entitle them to subsidized food grains at significantly reduced prices.

Above Poverty Line (APL): Individuals and families above the poverty line may also be eligible for APL ration cards, but they often pay higher prices for subsidized goods compared to BPL cardholders.

Other Categories: Some states have additional categories for ration cards based on specific criteria, such as Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) for extremely poor households, or Annapurna Scheme for destitute older persons.
