Getting To Know The Journey: From Devanshu Mahajan To Chimkandian

Born and brought up in Delhi, Devanshu Mahajan aka Chimkandian always wanted to make people laugh. He was so invested in this, that from a young age, he started making videos for YouTube. Inspired by YouTube sensations like Bhuvan Bam, Devanshu aka Chimkandian wanted people to laugh their hearts out. And like it is said, we find a teacher in every person, Devanshu did find his teachers in the comedians.

However, Devanshu soon saw a dark road ahead of him as he saw no future in comedy. Though he had about 7000 followers on Facebook, it was tough to keep up with the growth as data connectivity and availability were limited. Then during his class 12th, his inclination tilted towards animation and VFX. His sole motive was to pass his 12th standard as his earlier marks were not very good but he also wanted to find what he wanted to pursue further.

After his 12th finals, Devanshu was still trying to figure out his way ahead. While he was interested in acting he wasn’t sure if he was cut out for it. Plus asking his family about a course in acting was also making him weak in his knees. After assessing all the possibilities and outcomes, he chose to go forth with a course in animation and VFX. As time passes, Devanshu drifted away from video making, and there came the point where he stopped making videos. Soon after he finished the course he got a well-paying job. Earning about sixty thousand as an animation artist that too on the first job was a big deal. However, the job didn’t make him much happy and he says, “Life me Sukh Nahi tha. It was like Kuch toh missing hai.”

Then one-day Devanshu was shown the Musically app by one of his acquaintances. He thought to himself that the person had about 7k followers without doing a lot of work. This motivated Devanshu to make videos again even though he did not have a fancy camera or other types of equipment. So in 2019, Devanshu started his video-making again however, he did not have much success initially. He tried all  genres of videos but nothing seemed to work. Sentimental videos did get some engagement but nothing exceptional. Making sad videos made Devanshu feel like he was missing the entire point of the act but it was the only thing that fetched little results.

Then Devanshu uploaded a video in his own voice sharing how he was not getting many views and this turned out to be his first viral reel. Trying to get a better hold of the situation he uploaded another video in his voice which was a roast video. This video too went viral and Devanshu got his click. For him, it was like God’s way of telling him how to go forth. However, Devanshu had a tough choice to make then. He was working as an animation designer and also had B.com tuition which gave him limited time to make videos. Thus, he had to choose if he wanted to continue this way or choose video making as a full-time job.

The choice was very simple for Devanshu and from then he never looked back. He had 6.8 and 2.7 million followers on two of his Tik Tok accounts. After Tik Tok was banned, Devanshu shifted to Instagram. Over there he gained a family of 1.7 million followers with three channels on YouTube having 8 million, 2, and 5 lakh followers. For Devanshu these followers are his family who has been with him and are growing with him.

Devanshu has seen many ups and downs and though he knew his choice, he had a difficult decision to make. “I just know one thing, if you are good at something don’t leave it. Keep on going and one day you will succeed. It may take time but it is definite that you will succeed.”
