In a double delight, keeping in mind the upcoming Asian Games, India’s archers and shooters registered impressive podium finishes on Thursday at the World Cup and World Championship in France and Azerbaijan, respectively. In Paris, India’s recurve archers clinched two bronze medals in the men’s and women’s team events at the World Cup Stage 4. The Indian men’s recurve team, comprising Dhiraj Bommadevara, Atanu Das and Tushar Shelke defeated Spain’s Andres Temino, Yun Sanchez and Pablo Acha 6-2 (54-56, 57-55, 56-54, 57-55) in the bronze medal play-off.


Both teams lose to Taipei


The second-seeded Indian men’s had previously lost in the semi-finals to Chinese Taipei to miss out on the gold medal match. The Indian men lost 0-6 (54-56, 47-58, 55-56). The women’s team, comprising Ankita Bhakat, Bhajan Kaur and Simranjeet Kaur also met with a similar fate, losing 0-6 (52-57, 47-56, 52-53) to Chinese Taipei in the semis. In the bronze medal playoff, the Indian women’s team overcame a two-set deficit to beat Mexico 5-4 (52-55, 52-53, 55-52, 54-52) (27-25) in the shoot-off.

Meanwhile, in Baku, India’s men’s 10m air pistol team, comprising Shiva Narwal, Sarabjot Singh and Arjun Singh Cheema won the country its first medal—a bronze—in the ISSF World Championship that got underway on Thursday. Their aggregate score of 1,734 was nine points adrift of Germany, who clinched the silver medal. China took the gold medal in the event.

Shooters score 1,734 points

Narwal shot 579, Sarabjot 578 and Cheema 577 to aggregate 1,734 points. The World Championship also serves as the 2024 Paris Olympics qualification tournament. The Chinese team of Zhang Bowen (587), Liu Junhui (582) and Xie Yu (580) took the top podium with an aggregate of 1,749 points, while the German team, comprising Robin Walter (586), Michael Schwald (581) and Paul Froehlich (576) bagged the silver medal with an aggregate score of 1,743. However, none of the three Indian shooters could make the eight-player final and are not in contention for individual medals.
