J&K Terror Attacks: Big Terrorist Attack In J&K's Shopian And Anantnag

Bids to disrupt peace in Jammu & Kashmir continue amid the ongoing Lok Sabha Polls 2024. Over 5 terror attacks, including IAF convoy attack, have taken place in UT since April, 4 out of which turned out to be fatal. In yet another attack, a former BJP Sarpanch was killed in a targeted attack by terrorists in Shopian days ahead of polling. Meanwhile, a separate firing incident broke out in Anantnag’s Pahalgam that injured a tourist couple from Jaipur. Taking to ‘X’ JKNC chief Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah condemned the attacks. Farooq Abdullah demanded an investigation and also raised questions about the identity of the killer. He also called for international pressure to be created on Pakistan for being epicentre of terrorism. The incident sparked political row when JKPDP chief Mehbooba Mufti raised questions on timing of attacks targeting the GoI. Taxing to ‘X’, she said “timing of these attacks given that South election was delayed without any reason is a cause of concern”.  Meanwhile, Former J&K Dy CM and BJP leader Kavinder Gupta on May 19 launched an indirect attack on JKNC, JKPDP. Expressing grief, he said “parties that want Article 370 back are somewhere responsible for such attacks”. Meanwhile, the areas have been cordoned off and search operations have been launched to hunt down hiding terrorists. Parts of Shopian, which falls under the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency, will vote on May 20 in the fifth phase. Notably, the 5 Lok Sabha Constituencies in J&K are undergoing Polls in five phases.

Violence & Unrest Intensifies In PoK While J&K Celebrates Festival Of Democracy

 Fueled by Pakistan’s economic crisis, protests have rocked PoK due to clashes between protesters and authorities. People are on streets against skyrocketing inflation and violent protests have left at least 3 people dead and 90 injured. The protest is being led by Awami Action Committee which demanded tax-free electricity from Mangla Dam and subsidies on wheat flour. Clashes ensued between law enforcement and protesters in Muzaffarabad, Dadyal, Mirpur, and other parts of PoK. While tension has heightened in PoK, Jammu and Kashmir is celebrating world’s largest festival of democracy. Years after article 370 was abrogated, people in Kashmir queued up to exercise their franchise and be part of democratic process. Home Minister Amit Shah has said, “Modi government's decision to abrogate Article 370 is showing results”. The HM’s remarks came a day after about 38 per cent polling was recorded in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency. India has remained resolute on its resolve that PoK is an integral parts of the country. Recently, EAM Jaishankar made big statement and said “PoK will be part of India”. Speaking on violence in PoK, Ghulam Nabi Azad said that “he felt sorry for Pakistan’s people”.

Muzaffarabad Protest: PoK Activist Ayub Mirza Urges India To Liberate Pok

Amid the Lok Sabha Polls in India, voices to merge Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has grown louder. Time and again, India has remained resolute, calling entire Jammu and Kashmir including PoK as part of India. Meanwhile, anti-Pak protests in several regions of Pakistan’s illegally occupied Kashmir have rocked the neighbor. People in the region, particularly the younger generation, have confronted Pakistani forces on the streets. Udhampur Violence: Village Defence Guard Killed In Encounter With Terrorists

Bids to disrupt peace continue in parts of Jammu and Kashmir amid Lok Sabha Elections. In a fresh encounter between security forces and terrorists in Udhampur, another VDG was killed on May 11. A massive search operation was launched while the area has been cordoned off following the gunbattle. Based on inputs from locals, one terrorist has been arrested and sketches of six suspects have been released. A bounty of Rs 5-10 lakhs has been announced for the locals on information of suspected individuals. Security has been heightened across the Union Territory amid LS Polls 2024 to thwart terror bids. Several encounters have taken place between security forces and terrorists in last few weeks in Kashmir. In April, a Rajouri resident was killed in a targeted attack and a few days later a VDG member was shot dead in Udhampur. Earlier this month, an IAF officer was killed in an ambush attack on their convoy by a group of terrorists. As per reports, several terrorists are still taking cover in the thick vegetation across the UT.

As Lok Sabha Elections 2024 moves to the 4th phase, armed forces have activated an extreme-level security grid in Poonch for a straight 6th day in Jammu & Kashmir. An extensive search operation has been launched in J&K’s Poonch after a dastardly ambush attack on an IAF convoy on May 04. The mortal remains of Corporal Vikky Pahade were brought to Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara on May 06. The family members of deceased IAF personnel were in grief after hearing about the demise. However, there was a sense of pride amongst them that he had sacrificed his life for the nation.Corporal Vikky Pahade lost his life in a terror attack that happened in J&K’s Poonch on May 04.His sister said, “I want to send this message to the people of the country that every son should be dedicated to the country. I am proud of my brother. I want that justice should be served.” One of the members of his family said, “We got to know about it a day before yesterday. We were informed that he was shot and he has been airlifted to the hospital. Then later we got to know that he lost his life. This is a shock for the family as he was the only brother of three sisters.”
