Monsoon arrives in Nicobar Islands

Southwest monsoon, the lifeline of India’s farm-based economy, on Sunday made its onset over the Nicobar Islands, the southernmost region of the country, the IMD said here. “Southwest monsoon has advanced into some parts of the Maldives, and the Comorin area and some parts of the South Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and South Andaman Sea on Sunday,” the weather office said. The annual rainfall phenomenon is expected to reach Kerala by May 31. The date of monsoon onset over Kerala has varied widely over last 150 years, earliest being May 11 in 1918, and most delayed being June 18 in 1972, according to IMD data. Madhya Pradesh: Dalit couple beaten, made to wear garlands of shoes

An elderly Dalit couple has been allegedly beaten up and made to wear garlands of shoes in Madhya Pradesh’s Ashok Nagar district, police said on Sunday. The couple’s son had allegedly been involved in an eve-teasing incident, they said. A case has been registered against 10 persons who were at large in connection with the incident of thrashing the couple which took place on Friday in Kilora village under Mungaoli police station limits, an official said.  The couple’s son had been allegedly involved in eve-teasing the wife of one of the accused following which the Dalit family left the village, Mungaoli police station in-charge Gabbar Singh Gurjar said. Back-to-back terrorist attacks in Kashmir

Terrorists struck at two places in Kashmir on Saturday night, killing a former sarpanch in Shopian and injuring a tourist couple from Rajasthan in Anantnag, two days ahead of Lok Sabha elections in Baramulla. The first attack took place on an open tourist camp near Pahalgam and the second on the former sarpanch at Hirpora in south Kashmir, officials said. “Terrorists fired upon and injured a woman, Farha, a resident of Jaipur (in Rajasthan) and her spouse Tabrez at Yannar in Anantnag. The injured were evacuated to a hospital for treatment. The area has been cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” the Kashmir Zone Police posted on X. In another attack, within half-an-hour, terrorists shot dead former sarpanch Aijaz Sheikh in Shopian’s Hirpora around 10.30 pm, the officials said. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday claimed the BJP has launched a campaign — “Operation Jhaadu” — to crush the Aam Aadmi Party as the saffron party sees the AAP as a challenge. Addressing party workers ahead of the AAP’s proposed protest march, he said there will be bigger challenges ahead and asked the cadre to be prepared to face them. “PM Narendra Modi is worried about the rise of the AAP. Security beefed at BJP headquarters The Delhi Police has beefed up security in and around the BJP headquarters here in view of a protest announced by AAP. The traffic police has also issued an advisory. “In view of the proposed protest by a political party at DDU Marg Delhi, Traffic will remain heavy at DDU Marg, IP Marg, Minto Road and Vikas Marg. DDU marg may be closed for traffic movement between 11 am to 2 pm. Kindly avoid these roads and plan your journey accordingly,” the traffic police in a post on X. Maharashtra: Cop booked for molesting 22-year-old woman in Nagpur

A Maharashtra cop has been reportedly booked for allegedly molesting a 22-year-old woman in Nagpur, a police official said on Sunday, reported the PTI. The cop, a police inspector from Maharashtra's Akola district was booked by the police for allegedly molesting the woman, the official said. According to the PTI, the police official was identified as Dhananjay Sayre (53), posted at Khadan police station in Akola district in Maharashtra, is an acquaintance of the woman's father. In her complaint, the woman said Sayre was in touch with her on the pretext of helping her prepare for competitive exams. She grew suspicious when Sayre frequently called her and asked her to stay with him for guidance, as per the PTI. The woman then stopped communicating with Sayre. The policeman traced the young woman's location and arrived in Nagpur on Saturday. When she stepped out for work, he followed her for some distance and grabbed her hand. Sayre fled the scene after she raised an alarm, the official said, the news agency reported. Acting on the woman's complaint, the Nandanvan police in the city booked Sayre for molestation, the official added, the PTI reported. Woman robbed after miscreants throw chemical powder on her in Thane; two booked A woman was allegedly robbed after two miscreants flung a chemical substance on her in Maharashtra's Thane district. The police have booked two unidentified persons in connection with the matter, the police said on Sunday, reported the PTI. The duo allegedly stole her bag containing a laptop, police said. A case under section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Kolsewadi police station in Kalyan on Saturday, an official said. The 26-year-old woman, a resident of Mumbai, was on her way to meet her friend in Kalyan at night when two miscreants followed her from the railway station and flung some chemical powder at her. They then snatched her bag and fled the scene, he said, according to the PTI. The woman was injured in the attack and was administered first aid at a hospital, he said. (with PTI inputs)

Slab collapses at under-construction building in Nagpur; no injuries

A slab at an under-construction building collapsed in Maharashtra's Nagpur district on Sunday, a fire department official said, reported the PTI. No one was injured in the incident in the Chhaoni area, he said. A builder is constructing a multi-floor structure at the spot and the slab of the ground floor collapsed in the evening, the civic official said, as per the PTI. Tanker explodes in Pimpri Chinchwad area of Pune Meanwhile, a massive explosion took place in a gas tanker in Chakan area of Pimpri Chinchwad of Pune district in Maharashtra in the wee hours of Sunday, reported the ANI. The intensity of the explosion was so high that it damaged nearby hotels, houses and parked trucks. No causalities have been reported in the incident, the officials said, as per the ANI. According to the reports, the primary reason for the explosion was the illegal refilling of the gas in the tanker, which caused damage to the nearby areas. DCP of Pimpri Chinchwad Police, Shivaji Pawar, said, "In the morning, in a Chakan area of Pimpri Chinchwad, an explosion occurred, which was so massive that it damaged nearby parked trucks and areas. The primary possible reason for the explosion is illegal refilling of the gas in the tanker," according to the ANI. "There is no need to worry, as no causalities have been reported so far. We are further investigating the matter," he added. A case has been registered, and police are further investigating the incident. Two killed after speeding luxury car hit their motorcycle in Pune In an another incident, two persons were killed when the speeding luxury car hit their motorcycle in the city on Sunday, the police said. The 17-year-old car driver was detained after a case was registered against him. He was produced in a juvenile court which granted him bail, they said. "In the accident case, the father of the accused and the bar which served liquor to the juvenile/accused are being proceeded against under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act," Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar said in a statement, according to the PTI. As per section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, a person with actual control or charge of a child can be punished if he assaults, abandons or neglects the child wilfully, and abuses him, causing mental or physical illness. Section 77 pertains to giving liquor or drugs to a child. The accident took place around 3.15 am in Kalyani Nagar when a group of friends after a party at a restaurant in the area was returning home on their motorbikes. (with ANI and PTI inputs)

Three persons die after lightning strikes in Telangana

At least three persons lost their lives in separate incidents after lightning struck them in Vikarabad district of Telangana on Sunday, the police said, reported the PTI. The incidents took place in two villages in Yalal mandal of Vikarabad district of Telangana when it was raining, the officials said, as per the PTI. Two persons died after being struck by lightning in an agricultural field while another man, who was standing under a tree, died in another lightning strike, they said. The deceased were aged between 26 to 40, police said, according to the PTI. The Met Centre of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Telangana has forecast that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 KMPH) are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Medak, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy in Telangana on Sunday. Two men drown in Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur In an another incident in Madhya Pradesh, two men, one of them shooting a reel for social media, drowned in the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur city on Sunday, the police said, according to the PTI. The drownings occurred at the old bridge in Tilwara Ghat, an official said. Ankur Goswami (20) jumped off the bridge into the river after asking his friend to shoot a video of him, Tilwara police station in-charge Brijesh Mishra said.Ankur tried to swim to the banks but started drowning, and his friend raised an alarm, he said, as per the PTI. Local divers tried to save him, but he was dead by the time they fished him out, the official said. A video has surfaced on social media, in which Goswami can be seen jumping into the river after telling his friend to shoot a reel, an official said, the news agency reported on Sunday. In a similar incident, another 20-year-old man, Niraj Chakraborty, drowned at Tilwara ghat during the day, he said, the PTI reported. Man assaults wife, pierces nails on her private parts; held in Pune

A man, a Nepal national, was arrested in Pimpri-Chinchwad area of Pune in Maharashtra for allegedly assaulting his wife and piercing blade and iron nails into her private parts on suspicion of an extramarital affair, reported the ANI. The incident happened on May 11, the police said. The 30-year-old suspect, suspected his 28-year-old wife, also a Nepali national, of having an affair, and assaulted her after tying her up. He the allegedly pierced a sharp blade, and two iron nails, and placed a lock on his wife's private parts, the police said, as per the ANI. According to the ANI, the victim was later rushed to a nearby hospital, where she is undergoing treatment for her injuries, they said. The accused husband, who works as a watchman, has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation), the police said. Nivriti Kolhatkar, Senior Inspector of the Pimpri Chinchwad Police, said that the case has been registered at Wakad Police Station and further investigation is going on, according to the ANI, "A case was registered against the accused at Wakad Police Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 506(2) (criminal intimidation), and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt). The case is under investigation and the woman's well-being is closely monitored," the news agency reported on Sunday. Woman robbed after miscreants throw chemical powder on her Meanwhile, in an another incident, a woman was allegedly robbed after two miscreants flung a chemical substance on her in Maharashtra's Thane district. The police have booked two unidentified persons in connection with the matter, the police said on Sunday, reported the PTI. The duo allegedly stole her bag containing a laptop, police said. A case under section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Kolsewadi police station in Kalyan on Saturday, an official said. The 26-year-old woman, a resident of Mumbai, was on her way to meet her friend in Kalyan at night when two miscreants followed her from the railway station and flung some chemical powder at her. The intensity of the explosion was so high that it damaged nearby hotels, houses and parked trucks. No causalities have been reported in the incident, the officials said, as per the ANI. According to the reports, the primary reason for the explosion was the illegal refilling of the gas in the tanker, which caused damage to the nearby areas. Severe heatwave grips parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat

Severe heatwave conditions were observed in some parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday. According to the ANI, the IMD said that Barmer in Rajasthan experienced a scorching high of 46.9 degrees Celsius. Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh also recorded a searing 46.9 degrees Celsius. Surendranagar and Deesa in Gujarat also recorded temperatures ranging between 45 and 45.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday. "Today, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions were observed in some parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. Heatwave conditions in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi; in isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh," IMD said in a post on X, as per the ANI. IMD had on Saturday forecast a heatwave and severe heatwave conditions across vast swathes of North India, including several parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, between May 17 and 21. While a red alert for severe heatwaves was issued for west Rajasthan, an orange alert was also issued for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, East Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Gujarat. IMD issues 'red alert' for Delhi; temperature likely to touch 44 degrees The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a red alert in Delhi informing that the temperatures can range between 28 to 44 degrees Celsius, reported the ANI. According to the ANI, senior IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said that the current situation will prevail for the next week. "Generally, May is considered the hottest month. If there is no rainfall activity in North India, then the temperature normally crosses 45 degrees Celsius. It is forecast that this situation will prevail for the next week. This scenario will continue for the next 5 days in Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana. We have issued a red alert. A heatwave situation will exist in UP for the next 3-4 days. Heatwaves will also prevail in North MP. We have issued an orange alert for the region," he said, as per the ANI. Former BJP Sarpanch killed, couple injured in separate attacks

A former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sarpanch was killed, and a couple from Jaipur were injured in two separate incidents of firing by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian and Anantnag districts, respectively late on Saturday night, the police said, reported the ANI. According to Kashmir Zone Police, the deceased former Sarpanch was identified as Aijaz Ahmad, as per the ANI. The police said that terrorists fired upon Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh at Heerpora in Shopian district. They said that the area was cordoned off. He was evacuated and taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. "BJP leader and ex-Sarpanch Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh succumbed to his injuries after being fired upon by terrorists in Heerpora in South Kashmir's Shopian," IGP Kashmir said, the news agency reported. In the second incident, a couple from Jaipur was injured in the Yannar area of South Kashmir's Anantnag district. "Terrorists fired upon and injured a lady, Farha, a resident of Jaipur, and her spouse, Tabrez, at Yannar in Anantnag. The injured were evacuated and taken to the hospital for treatment," the police said, as per the ANI. According to sources, the condition of the injured couple is stable. Search operation launched after suspicious movement near International Border in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua Security forces have launched a massive search operation after picking up movement of three suspicious persons, believed to be terrorists, near the International Border in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Sunday, the PTI reported. A Special Police Officer (SPO) reported the movement of suspected persons in Tarnah nallah near Jangi chak in Hiranagar sector during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, the officials said. An alert was immediately sounded in the entire area of the border police post Sanyal and reinforcements from the police, army and BSF were rushed for a joint search and cordon operation, they said, according to the PTI. The searches are underway in Tarnah nallah and adjoining villages, including Rakh Sarkar Palhi and Pathwal when last reports were received, the officials said, the news agency reported.
