Six people—including a woman—were charged with carrying out a cat's final rites at a crematorium in Mira Bhayander, Maharashtra's Thane district. The cremation of the feline animal was conducted where human remains were burned to ashes, a police official said.

According to the PTI report, based on a complaint from representatives of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC), the case was filed on Wednesday under section 297 (trespassing on burial places) of the Indian Penal Code. However, as of Thursday, no one had been taken into custody in connection with the matter, the report added.

"The incident took place on the evening of December 22. Two persons cremated their cat at the public facility in Bhayander West. Six persons have been booked," the Bhayander police station official told PTI.

According to the report, no explanation was given as to why the complaint was filed late.

Meanwhile, in another unrelated case from Navi Mumbai, a 29-year-old man was booked for allegedly marrying a 12-year-old girl, repeatedly raping her and impregnating her. The officials from the police told the news agency PTI that child marriage, which is a punishable offence in India, happened around six months ago.

Reportedly, the man sexually abused her and got her pregnant. The PTI report added that the man and minor are originally from the Satara district and it was because of a survey undertaken that the news of a girl's pregnancy came out.

The PTI report stated that during a survey on Thursday, a Panvel doctor learnt that the girl was four months along and altered the cops. Reportedly, the station house officer of Khandeshwar police station said a case has been registered against the man under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

A doctor in Mumbai's Malad was also booked under the POCSO Act for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor and then abetting her suicide. Reportedly, the teen, aged 17, was working for the doctor as a compounder and died in the clinic; her family alleged that the doctor was harassing her and sexually exploiting her and filed a complaint against him at Kurar police station.
