The officials of the Railway Crime Branch Unit 6 have arrested a thief who used to steal bags of people kept on racks while they traveled in Mumbai local trains, an official said on Friday.

The cops have recovered three laptops and three mobile phones worth more than Rs 3 lakh following the arrest of the suspect, he said.

According to the police, the suspect has been identified as Sikandarkumar Rajkumar Ram (28).

The police sources said that he has a previous record of stealing bags on trains.

The police said, in April, a complaint was filed by Alistair Colaco (25), a resident of Vasai. Colaco had boarded a Churchgate-Bhayander Mumbai local train and he had kept his bag on the rack while travelling in the train. Later, he found it to be missing. He then approached police officials at Vasai station and filed an official complaint.

"A case under various sections of the IPC was registered. Bandra Railway Crime Unit 6 officials, under the guidance of Senior Inspector Arshuddin Shaikh and Police Inspector Rohit Sawant, along with API Abhijeet Telor and their team, began the investigation," an official said.

The team of police officials searched for criminals using a similar modus operandi to commit the crime and reached the suspect. They detained him from Grant Road, and during the interrogation, he confessed to the crime, the official said.

He added, the cops also recovered the stolen property of the complainant.

He has a previous crime record with seven cases registered against him for stealing valuables and bags from racks of running local trains.

"Sikandarkumar Rajkumar Ram has been arrested and was produced before the court, where he was remanded to police custody," the officer added.
