The iconic Gateway of India transformed into a lively hub where locals gathered to embrace the rainy season on Friday

In a 10-hour period that ended at 6pm, the island city recorded an average 35.72 mm, while eastern Mumbai witnessed 33.30 mm and the western part of the city got 29.92 mm, a civic official said

Mumbaikars were seen enjoying the rains at the city's sea-facing promenades of Marine Drive and Gateway of India

Families, friends, and couples were seen strolling along the waterfront as their faces were lit with smiles

There were no reports of major waterlogging, though local trains on the Central Railway network were running late by 10-20 minutes in the morning

The official said local trains operated by the Western Railway also faced some delays. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘yellow’ alert predicting heavy to moderate rainfall on Friday

Widespread rains since Thursday evening had caused waterlogging in some low-lying areas of Kurla West and Andheri subway last night, official said

Monsoon arrived in Mumbai on June 9, earlier than the normal date of June 11, but rains have been sparse all through the month

The BMC has urged citizens to avoid standing under trees during heavy rains. "Trees may fall during heavy rain or gusty winds. Please avoid seeking shelter under trees or parking vehicles near them during such times," the BMC tweet read
