Maharashtra Day, observed on May 1 every year, commemorates the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960.

Preparation for the Maharashtra Day event was underway at Dadar's Shivaji Park wherein the workers were seen setting up frame for a stage.

Government officials, dignitaries, and prominent personalities often gather on Maharashtra Day to pay homage to the state's illustrious history and to honour the contributions of notable leaders and freedom fighters.

The Maharashtra Day celebrations typically commence with the hoisting of the state flag followed by cultural performances, parades, and exhibitions showcasing Maharashtra's arts, crafts, and cuisine.

Government agencies and cultural organisations organise special events and competitions, including traditional folk dances, music concerts, and literary symposiums, to promote the state's cultural heritage.

On May 1, 1960, following the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, the state of Bombay was bifurcated into two separate linguistic states: Maharashtra, predominantly Marathi-speaking, and Gujarat, predominantly Gujarati-speaking.

This division was based on linguistic and cultural considerations, fulfilling the aspirations of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement.

The day of May 1 was then chosen to commemorate the formation of Maharashtra as a separate state. Since then, Maharashtra Day has been celebrated annually with great enthusiasm across the state.
