Mumbai weather update: City, suburbs to see light to moderate rain

The sky over Mumbai and the metropolitan region remained overcast as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest Mumbai weather update predicted that the city and surrounding areas are likely to see light to moderate rainfall.

The weather agency predicted a "generally cloudy sky with possibility of light to moderate rain or thundershowers in city and suburbs" in the next 24 hours. The agency also said that the maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 34 degrees Celcius and 26 degrees Celcius respectively.

The city, on Friday morning, saw rain after a two-day lull bringing much-needed respite from the heat.

The IMD, per the Mumbai weather update, has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, in its Mumbai weather update, stated that the city will be experiencing a low tide at 1.23 pm of 2.36 metres and added that a high tide of 3.43 meters is likely to hit the city's coast around 7.19 pm. BMC added that in the wee hours of June 17, the city will see another low tide of 1.50 meters at 2.06 am.

IMD predicts rain across eastern and north-east India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has expected mild to moderate rainfall in the eastern and northeastern regions, notably Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, West Assam, Meghalaya, and West Arunachal Pradesh, over the next several hours. The IMD also warned of heavy rains, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusts in several areas, reported ANI.

According to the ANI report, earlier on Friday, the IMD issued orange and red alerts for West Bengal and the northeastern regions, anticipating severe rain in the coming days.

Arunachal Pradesh is projected to get heavy to very heavy rains on Monday and Tuesday, resulting in an orange alert for the state. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday, IMD stated.

Reportedly, the IMD issued a red alert for the Sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal and Sikkim, anticipating heavy rains. A red alert was also issued for Assam and Meghalaya due to heavy rainfall forecasts.

"Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim are very likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy (115.5-204.4 mm) with extremely heavy falls (above 204.4 mm) on 15th & 16th June and likely to get heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) with extremely heavy falls (above 204.4 mm) during 17th-19th June 2024," the IMD posted on X.

Conditions are favourable for the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into more parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the northwest Bay of Bengal over the next 3-4 days, according to the IMD.
