Mumbai Coastal Road’s north-bound arm sees 21k motorists daily

Both arms of the Coastal Road have witnessed similar traffic

At an average of 21,000 motorists per day, the partially opened north-bound arm of the Mumbai Coastal Road has witnessed the same, or perhaps a slightly higher number of vehicles passing through since its opening, compared to the south-bound stretch.

While average traffic on the south-bound route was 17,000 vehicles per day in May, according to data from the BMC, an average of 21,000 vehicles used the north-bound route from Marine Lines to Worli's Lotus Jetty from its opening on June 11 to June 14. The slightly higher number of motorists on the north-bound route might be due to people heading there for a joyride on the coastal road. "There are many who might have gone for a joyride to see the tunnel and new road. We will get the actual number of users next week, and we think it may be similar to the south-bound traffic," said civic official.

Out of a total 10.5 km, an approximately 6.5-km stretch has been thrown open to the public on both sides. The remaining phase is slated to open by October-end. The BMC estimates around 68,000 vehicles will use the coastal road daily once the project is fully operational. "And once the Versova-Bandra sea link is opened, it is estimated that one lakh vehicles will ply there," said the official.
