The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, on Saturday, advised Mumbaikars to avoid going to the beaches as the India Meteorological Department and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services have issued an alert warning of high-energy swell waves along the Indian coast.
The alert, per BMC's announcement, was effective for 36 hours beginning 11.30 am till 11.30 pm today (May 5). The civic body said that the nearshore and beach areas may experience swell waves reaching heights of 0.5 to 1.5 meters.
The BMC administration appealed for cooperation from citizens, asking them to follow the guidance of security guards, lifeguards, and other agencies deployed along the beaches and near the seashore.
"The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) have issued an alert indicating that the sea will be dominated by high-energy swell waves along the nearshore/beach areas. This alert is in effect for 36 hours, from 11:30 AM today (4th May) until 11:30 PM tomorrow (5th May)," the BMC wrote in their announcement on X (formerly Twitter).
They further wrote, "Shore areas and low-lying areas may experience the combined effect of swell waves, which may reach heights of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. As a precautionary measure, citizens are advised to refrain from entering the sea during the next 36 hours. Extra precautions are recommended, particularly due to the increasing number of tourists visiting beaches during the summer vacation."
The civic agency, in a caution to Mumbaikars, said, "Residents in coastal areas are also urged to remain cautious. Fisherfolk along the coast are urged to keep their boats at a safe distance on the shore during this period to prevent damage from collisions. Additionally, precautions are advised while fishing in the sea. Small vessels may navigate nearshore with due caution."
The BMC administration appeals to citizens to cooperate with security guards, lifeguards, and all deployed agencies on the beaches/near the seashore, the civic body stated.
